Visit Chichén Itzá, one of Mexico's most important Mayan-Toltec sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1988), recently selected as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Explore the Castillo Pyramid, Cuju Ball Court, Warrior Temple, and Oval Observatory. Learn about the sacred Quetzalcoatl Pyramid and its acoustic properties. Then visit Cenote Ik-Kil, considered sacred by the Mayans and used for rain god Chaac ceremonies, featuring a 26-meter descent to a swimming platform. Finally, visit Suytun Cenote, an Instagram-famous turquoise limestone pit with dramatic natural light effects. Depart early morning for boat tour of Xochimilco, Mexico's "Little Venice," a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1987) meaning "place where flowers are sown." Explore dense network of lakes, rivers, islands creating wondrous aquatic world, ride colorful Mexican-style boats, and visit Mexico's most important flower market. Then visit National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in University City south of Mexico City, one of Mexico's best universities and highest-ranked in Latin America. Campus designed by famous architects with murals by Diego Rivera and other masters; campus now UNESCO World Heritage Site. Finally visit National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, founded around discovery and preservation of the "Sun Stone," a revered Aztec object. Museum showcases development of early civilization throughout Americas, featuring remarkable ancient achievements and solving historical mysteries. Paseo de la Reforma - Vehicle - Teotihuacán - Vehicle - Plaza de la Constitución
Mexico City, a welcoming vibrant city steeped in millennia of civilization. Morning: walk along famous Paseo de la Reforma, a 12-kilometer avenue modeled after European boulevards (Vienna's Ringstrasse, Paris's Champs-Élysées), to admire formal architecture and monumental statues commemorating Mexican and American history including Cuauhtémoc, Simón Bolívar, José de San Martín, Christopher Columbus, and Angel of Independence Monument. Proceed to Teotihuacán, known as "place where the gods made man," a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1987) located 50 kilometers from Mexico City. Climb the massive Pirámide del Sol (third largest pyramid in world) and gaze over the 2-kilometer-long Way of the Dead avenue and Pirámide de la Luna. Afternoon: visit Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (pilgrimage site since 1531 when Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego), stop at Palace of Fine Arts (iconic 1905 building with neoclassical art nouveau exterior and art deco interior by Adamo Boari and Federico Mariscal), finally reach Plaza de la Constitución, heart of Mexico City, rebuilt by Spanish colonists after Aztec destruction, now surrounded by Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana), Templo Mayor ruins, and historic Spanish colonial buildings.
