Madrid - Zaragoza

Greeted by the first rays of sunlight in Madrid, begin with visits to Spanish capital landmarks including Spain Square (Cervantes Monument, Don Quixote statue), Columbus Monument (60 meters high with flying goddesses and black lions), Royal Palace of Madrid (exterior visit, white granite building 180m per side, formerly royal residence now used for state receptions), Plaza Mayor (major public space built 1580-1619), and Puerta del Sol & Kilometer Zero (center of Spain, established by King Philip II in 16th century, represented by semicircular tile sign). In afternoon, depart for Zaragoza (320km, 3.5 hours). Upon arrival, visit Plaza del Ángel for Baroque architecture viewing, then proceed to majestic Basilica of Our Lady of the Pilar within Plaza de la Reina. Zaragoza - Barcelona

Morning departure along route to Barcelona (310km, 3.5 hours). Upon arrival, visit most representative Sagrada Familia, masterpiece of architectural genius Gaudí, with three facades in magnificent coordinated manner with simple neat lines; interior inspired by caves, mountains, flowers, plants and animals. Days 3

Barcelona - Valencia - Alicante

Morning departure along coastline to Valencia, Spain's third largest city (350km, 4 hours). Valencia historically served as Spain's gateway to Mediterranean, center of commerce and culture, attracted Arabs, enjoyed prosperity other cities lacked. Although lost former aura, remains important trade fair city; Fallas Fire Festival held every March makes it famous. World-famous Spanish seafood paella originated here. Visit Plaza de la Reina, ancient city gate, and Valencia Cathedral in old town. Most eye-catching feature is agate cup in south wing chapel, believed to be Holy Grail used by Jesus at Last Supper. Later depart for white coast resort city of Alicante (180km, 2 hours). Optional morning visit to Peniscola on Costa del Sol (beautiful sea views, medieval castle, surrounded by sea on three sides, Pope Luna lived 18 years here starting 1411). Alicante - Granada - Mijas/Malaga

Morning departure for Granada, historic city at foot of Sierra Nevada Mountains in Andalucia (350km, 4 hours). Granada ruled by Visigoths and Arabs, last stronghold of Arab Moorish dynasty ruling Iberian Peninsula for 800 years. 15th century, King Ferdinand expelled Arabs, completed unification of Spain. Seville - Lisbon

Morning departure towards Portuguese border (470km, 5 hours). Afternoon arrival at Cape Roca, westernmost point of European continent.
