Madrid - Zaragoza
Greeted by the first rays of sunlight in Madrid, begin with visits to Spanish capital landmarks including Spain Square (Cervantes Monument, Don Quixote statue), Columbus Monument (60 meters high with flying goddesses and black lions), Royal Palace of Madrid (exterior visit, white granite building 180m per side, formerly royal residence now used for state receptions), Plaza Mayor (major public space built 1580-1619), and Puerta del Sol & Kilometer Zero (center of Spain, established by King Philip II in 16th century, represented by semicircular tile sign). In afternoon, depart for Zaragoza (320km, 3.5 hours). Upon arrival, visit Plaza del Ángel for Baroque architecture viewing, then proceed to majestic Basilica of Our Lady of the Pilar within Plaza de la Reina. Legend holds Virgin Mary appeared here before ascension, making it considered the first chapel in history. Evening transfer to hotel for check-in and rest.
Zaragoza - Barcelona
Morning departure along route to Barcelona (310km, 3.5 hours). Upon arrival, visit most representative Sagrada Familia, masterpiece of architectural genius Gaudí, with three facades in magnificent coordinated manner with simple neat lines; interior inspired by caves, mountains, flowers, plants and animals. Continue to exterior of Camp Nou, home stadium of Spanish La Liga powerhouse Barcelona (largest stadium in European continent, currently 120,000+ capacity, second largest in world). Due to renovation, photograph outside only. Visit Olympic Games venue on Montjuic Hill, venue of 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, offering city panorama from hilltop. Visit bustling Las Ramblas (over 1km avenue starting from Plaza Catalunya to Columbus Tower, full of flower shops, pavilions, street artists, built 18th century from medieval city walls). Visit Plaza Catalunya (central square, one of largest in Spain, core Barcelona life area). Barcelona - Valencia - Alicante
Morning departure along coastline to Valencia, Spain's third largest city (350km, 4 hours). Valencia historically served as Spain's gateway to Mediterranean, center of commerce and culture, attracted Arabs, enjoyed prosperity other cities lacked. Although lost former aura, remains important trade fair city; Fallas Fire Festival held every March makes it famous. World-famous Spanish seafood paella originated here. Visit Plaza de la Reina, ancient city gate, and Valencia Cathedral in old town. Most eye-catching feature is agate cup in south wing chapel, believed to be Holy Grail used by Jesus at Last Supper. Later depart for white coast resort city of Alicante (180km, 2 hours). Optional morning visit to Peniscola on Costa del Sol (beautiful sea views, medieval castle, surrounded by sea on three sides, Pope Luna lived 18 years here starting 1411). Evening hotel check-in in Alicante.
Alicante - Granada - Mijas/Malaga
Morning departure for Granada, historic city at foot of Sierra Nevada Mountains in Andalucia (350km, 4 hours). Granada ruled by Visigoths and Arabs, last stronghold of Arab Moorish dynasty ruling Iberian Peninsula for 800 years. 15th century, King Ferdinand expelled Arabs, completed unification of Spain. City contains relics of various civilizations and cultures. Visit Alhambra Palace (Red Palace), product of Moorish 'Golden Age', combines Islamic secular architecture with gardening techniques, masterpiece of Arabic palace and courtyard architecture, UNESCO World Heritage 1984, composed of Alcazaba Castle, Nasrid Palaces, Generalife Palace, Lion Courtyard, Myrtles Courtyard. Interior entry possible with advance booking. If no booking, free visit to old town and Charles V Palace area. Afternoon travel to famous resort Costa del Sol (155km, 2 hours). At dusk, arrive at white house village of Mijas for tour, classic Andalucia mountain city scenery overlooking Costa del Sol beautiful scenery. Overnight in Malaga or nearby city.
Malaga - Ronda - Seville
Morning departure for romantic cliff town of Ronda (120km, 1.5 hours). Spectacular and magical city in sky, breathtaking cliffs and ancient bridges make Ronda most suitable town for honeymoons and elopements in Hemingway's works. Birthplace of bullfighting art. Stroll streets and alleys experiencing leisurely local life. Visit famous natural cliffs, walk stone bridge connecting old and new towns with deep abyss below and beautiful scenery ahead. Ancient Spanish bullring where current Spanish bullfighting style was born. Afternoon transfer to Seville, soul of Andalusia (130km, 1.5 hours). Former capital of Islamic Empire, guardian angel of Andalusian culture, birthplace of Flamenco dance, host of 1992 World Expo. Visit 16th century Cathedral, with Christopher Columbus tomb next to main altar honoring great navigator's discovery of New World, registered UNESCO World Heritage 1987. Visit Royal Palace of Seville, experienced both Islamic and Catholic dynasties, clever combination of past and present forming one of world's most complex and beautiful buildings. Stroll Santa Cruz Barrio (old Jewish quarter with whitewashed houses and courtyards), Torre del Oro (dodecagonal military watchtower controlling river access, name from golden shine on river), Maria Luisa Park (designed 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition, gave rise to 'Neo-Sevillian' garden style), Plaza de España (50,000 square meter plaza-palace with intricately carved porcelain paintings detailing history and style of bygone Spain).
Seville - Lisbon
Morning departure towards Portuguese border (470km, 5 hours). Afternoon arrival at Cape Roca, westernmost point of European continent. Feel vastness of Atlantic Ocean, purchase commemorative certificate proving foot on western end of Europe with great commemorative value. Travel to capital Lisbon. Visit famous Belém Tower, monument symbolizing Portugal as pioneer in age of navigation and discovery of New World, 16th century fortification, embarkation and disembarkation point for Portuguese explorers, UNESCO World Heritage since 1983, prominent example of Portuguese Manueline style. Visit Monument to the Discoveries (Portuguese Maritime Monument built 1960, stands by sea, magnificent symbol of Portugal, white stone sailboat appearance, exquisite stone carvings of figures including Henry, Da Gama and 80 other sailors). Visit Jerónimos Monastery, magnificent monastery in Belém district, treasure of architectural art from Portugal's maritime heyday, built commemorate discovery of sea route to India, famous navigator Vasco da Gama buried here, UNESCO World Heritage 1983 with nearby Belém Tower. Lisbon - Toledo - Madrid
Morning departure from Portugal for Madrid (590km, 6 hours). Afternoon visit ancient city of Toledo, surrounded by Tagus River and formidable walls, embodies Spanish history and culture, served as capital of Spain during heyday.
