Xiang Yu (232-202BC) was a Chinese warlord who founded and led the short-lived kingdom-state of Western Chu during the interregnum period between the Qin and Han dynasties known as the Chu–Han Contention (206–202 BC). The tomb discovered in a large-scale sacrificial pit in Jingzhou, Hubei Province, China, consists of numerous chariots and horses arranged in a precise, military-style formation. The main discovery was made at the Xiongjiazhang Mound in Jingzhou, part of a vast burial complex for high-ranking nobles of the ancient Chu State, which thrived during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods (circa 8th–3rd century BCE).

This is the largest sacrificial chariot pit ever found in China, containing 66 chariots and 258 horses buried alongside their master. The chariots were found arranged in a strict, ordered formation, suggesting a military or processional layout intended to serve the noble (possibly a king) in the afterlife.
